Description

Renowned and respected as one of the finest producers in Burgundy, Bouchard Père et Fils has truly become an institution, known for the exceptional quality of their wines and the diversity of its many vineyards.

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils has built up an estate of 130ha and, collectively, is the largest owner of Grand Crus (12ha) and Premier Crus (74ha) across the Côte d’Or. Bouchard Père et Fils represents almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards, including prestigious monopoles such as ‘Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus’ and ‘Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte’.

According to the legend, the Lord of Montrachet shared his land with his two sons. One became a Chevalier during the crusades and the other, illegitimate, is supposed to have given his name to Bâtard-Montrachet. Chevalier-Montrachet forms a horizontal strip at the top of the upper part of Montrachet and is made up of four terraces with different sub-soils, giving four different facets to this exceptional Grand Cru. During the 19th century, Bouchard acquired several vineyards and has now become the main owner and the only producer with vineyards on all four terraces.

Its really hard to imagine how a white Brugundy could be more flinty and minerally than this super-concentrated and super-vibrant Chevalier Montrachet. Lovely aromas of lemon blossom, jasmine, tangerine and nectarine, alongside all the stony stuff. Then comes the staggeringly long finish that is totally pure and precise. From Bouchard’s 2.3-hectare holding, which comprises almost a third of the entire Grand Cru site. Drink or hold.

Bouchard's 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru confirms its fine showing last year, unwinding in the glass with scents of pear, citrus oil, and toasted bread, complemented by hints of nutmeg, praline, and white flowers. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's satiny and incisive, with terrific depth at the core, chalky structuring extract, lively acids, and a long, resonant finish. This is as compelling an infant Chevalier as I can remember tasting at this address, and it should enjoy a brilliant future.

The usual blend of the four terraces, the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet featuring delicate scents of yellow plum, citrus fruit, flint, and smoke. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite taut on the entry, and a fine saline undertow enlivens the finish. A classically styled Chevalier, though I would like to see more mineralité.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Distinguished bouquet, with floral and fruit aromas as well as a toasted note. Complex and rich, without the least heaviness, this wine is elegance itself. Very good aging potential.
