Renowned and respected as one of the finest producers in Burgundy, Bouchard Père et Fils has truly become an institution, known for the exceptional quality of their wines and the diversity of its many vineyards.
Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils has built up an estate of 130ha and, collectively, is the largest owner of Grand Crus (12ha) and Premier Crus (74ha) across the Côte d’Or. Bouchard Père et Fils represents almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards, including prestigious monopoles such as ‘Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus’ and ‘Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte’.
In 1110, the Cistercian monks donated land in the village of Vougeot which they very quickly planted with vines and kept until the Revolution. Today, the prestigious "clos" of 50 hectares belongs to about 80 owners. The soils at Clos Vougeot have quite distinctive characteristics, from gravel and chalk at the top of the plateau producing a velvety wine, to brown, marly, clayey soil at the bottom giving stronger wines. Complex bouquet of red and black berries with spicy and slightly oaky notes. Dazzling elegance on the palate, with a perfect blend of finesse and raciness. Exceptionally good aging potential.
The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the upper part of the clos. One of my favourite aromatics from Bouchard, it is beautifully defined with effervescent red berry fruit, rose petals, and basalt scents. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins framing pure dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. Impressive mineralité comes through on the finely chiselled finish. This is a very well-crafted Clos de Vougeot
The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru opens in the glass with aromas of wild berries, plums, loamy soil, incense, and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, deep, and layered, it's rich and concentrated, built around a chassis of fine, powdery tannins and lively acids. Like so many of the region's more inherently structured sites this year, it's unusually elegant and seductive as a barrel sample.
