First time in 9 years a Pinot noir has taken out the top gong at the Royal Sydney Wine Show 2023. Best Red, Best Pinot Noir and Best Wine of the Show.
Planted in 1974 on Tasmania’s east coast, our vineyard at Bream Creek is one of the state’s oldest. The original 5 hectares consisted mainly of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer.
The vineyard was purchased by Fred Peacock in August 1990, who increased Pinot Noir plantings and introduced Sauvignon Blanc and Schonburger (one of the earliest commercial plantings in the Southern Hemisphere of this rare German varietal). With Fred's trademark dedication and passion, this pristine vineyard is now a showcase of grape varieties ideally suited to the cool maritime climate of East coast Tasmania.
Lovely nose packed with dark fruit aromas. Bright fresh palate of cherry and dark plum flavours with a spicy edge. Delightful long silky tannins with a lingering finish.
Cherry, raspberry, kind of succulent, but fresh too, with some spice, perfume, and quiet autumnal notes. It’s medium-bodied, plenty of juicy cherry and raspberry flavour, spiced plum, a pleasing sort of floral mouth-perfume, fine-grained tannin, and a finish of very good length, a little twist of orange peel bitterness to close. I can’t quite decide on 93 or 94 points, but either way, it’s a strong vintage for this wine.
