1996 in Champagne
From the first preparations for harvesting until the time when the figures in press log books were analysed and harvest declarations made, a general calm, a shared tranquillity, a sort of emotional serenity reigned supreme in Champagne in 1996. We witnessed a rapid succession of very contrasting periods which seemed to have been beneficial for the balanced growth of vegetation and grape clusters. The grapes and must from this harvest were of outstanding quality and produced some exceptional wines.
Tasted from magnum. Seamless from start to finish. An elegantly woven tapestry of fruit blossoms, citrus, honey and vanilla, creamy and pliant, finely integrated with the firm structure. This really sings today.
Spent nine years on lees; starts off with a pastry-crust aroma. The wine's mouthfeel is beautifully textured, neither too coarse nor too foamy. The flavor that manifests itself as butterscotch in the nonvintage brut is, here, like honey and toffee, adding richness to a pear-fruit core. A creamy, full and sexy wine, finishing medium-long. To toast with this wine is reason in and of itself to get married.
