Chateau Reynella - home to South Australia's oldest operating winery
Reynella, the pioneering heart of McLaren Vale's wine-growing legacy, owes its rich history to the vision and determination of John Reynella, the region's first settler. In a time when the land was untamed, John was not only the first to enclose his property with a fence but also among the earliest to cultivate vineyards and construct a wine cellar. It was in 1850 that he took a young apprentice named Thomas Hardy under his wing, leading to decades of wine expertise. With over twenty vintages by the 1860s, Reynella's commitment to winemaking excellence was firmly established.
Today, Reynella is renowned for producing wines of unparalleled quality, cherished for their heritage and character. Utilising a century-old Basket Press, Reynella crafts exceptional Shiraz, Cabernet, and Grenache wines from the McLaren Vale region, known for their capacity to age gracefully and earn critical acclaim.
With an impressive track record, Reynella has garnered numerous awards, including an astounding 53 trophies and 311 gold medals since 2008, solidifying its status as a top-tier wine brand.
