Montrachet is an intriguing anomaly amidst the steep terrain of Côte de Nuits, as its name, derived from Mont Rachet or "bald mountain," belies its relatively flat and parched landscape. The grand cru white wine Bâtard-Montrachet has a fascinating origin story that traces back to the division of land between the Seigneur of Montrachet's two sons - one a valiant knight who fought in the Crusades, and the other an illegitimate child, which inspired the name of the cru located just above Montrachet.
Three parcels totalling 0.38 hectares contribute to this head-turner. One plot is about 80 years old and the others are about 40. The deep colour is notable, and it leads to a bold nose with warm apple slices laced with baking spices. Vinous and mouth-filling, the finely-tuned acidity delivers bustling energy to this generous wine with a very fine, long finish.
