Description

Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py is hailed as a luminous star in the Burgundy constellation, revered by connoisseurs as a bastion of authentic "vin de garde," wines that evolve and magnify in quality with the passage of time. Their commitment to the vineyard is nothing short of meticulous, as evidenced by their organic certification dating back to 2003. With approximately 7.5 hectares under their stewardship, primarily gracing the slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, including the hallowed terroirs of four Grand Crus, as well as smaller holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Pommard, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Meursault, they have established an enological empire.

In the cellar, their winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention. Grapes are harvested judiciously, often at an earlier stage, stems intact, and judiciously aged in oak. The result is a portfolio of wines that resonate with the distinct character of their appellation and possess an innate ability to gracefully mature over time. Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py's wines are the epitome of Burgundian excellence, a timeless testament to the art of winemaking that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike.

This appellation comes from the Charmes-Chambertin vineyards, and the wines are generally sold under the same appellation. Mazoyères-Chambertin are generally silky on the palate, seductive and deliciously perfumed.

Review
The 2021 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is a real standout this year, with the inherent elegance of the vintage working in tandem with Loïc Dugat's efforts to render this site in a more seamless, transparent style. Bursting with aromas of plums, wild berries, damask roses, bergamot, sweet spices and forest floor, it's full-bodied, satiny and sensual, with melting tannins and a fleshy core of pure, vibrant fruit. My handwritten notes remark that Mazoyères seems to be "liberated" this year.

Review
A hint of crushed fennel sits atop the more deeply pitched and more sauvage-inflected aromas of wild dark berries, forest floor and plenty of floral elements. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate density to the muscular big-bodied flavors where the sappy dry extract coats the mouth as well as the firm core of supporting tannins on the powerful, youthfully austere and impressive long finish. This too is packed with potential and a wine that should easily be capable of 15 to 20 years of improvement.

Food Pairing

A classic wine pairing for Pinot Noir is roast duck, as the wine's elegant red fruit and earthy notes beautifully complement the rich, tender meat.
