Although Domaine de la Pousse D'Or has vineyards reaching back as far as the eighteenth century, it has only existed as it does today since 1964. It is a forward-thinking estate and one which was instrumental in pioneering a new technique for evaporating excess water to re-balance the must, resulting in less need for chaptalisation. It is perhaps unsurprising to learn, in view of this, that the Domaine is owned by a consortium of Australian shareholders. La Pousse d'Or is located a few kilometres from Beaune, in the commune of Volnay. The 13 hectares of vineyard are spread among the communes of Volnay, Pommard, and Santenay, each producing distinctive and stylish wines.
Les Feusselottes is a 4.4-ha premier cru vineyard directly below the vineyards and above Les Charmes. The soil is a mixture of limestone and clay – not dissimilar to Musigny (but not nearly as high up the hill) and two-thirds of Pousse d’Or’s small .42ha plot was planted in the 1920s with the other third planted in 1966. The wines from here are usually textbook chambolle with their minerality and purity of fruit.
An elegant, pure and fresh if ripe nose combines notes of both red and blue pinot fruit with those of plum and violet. The slighter sleeker if less seductive medium weight flavours also exude an evident minerality on the youthfully austere and persistent finish. This will need to add depth but the aging Cuvee and underlying material appear up to the task.
