Domaine Patrick Piuze is a recently founded but highly rated négociant business in Chablis, Burgundy, producing wines from numerous quality levels with Chardonnay.
Patrick Piuze was born in Quebec, Canada, but from the age of 18 (and after a chance meeting with Marc Chapoutier in Banff ski resort) travelled around the world working in vineyards in Australia, South Africa, and Israel. After a couple of years owning and running a wine bar in Montreal, he travelled to France and began a winemaking career, which included making Chablis for Olivier Leflaive and stints at Maison Verget and Jean-Marc Brocard.
With respect to the 2020 vintage, Piuze commented that it was "another hot and dry growing season where the trick was to preserve the acidity. As such, we chose to begin picking very early, which is to say on the 22nd of August. This date was between 90 to 95 days after the middle of the flowering, depending on the sector in question. The harvest conditions were, consistent with the growing season in general, also hot and dry so we picked as quickly as we could.
Here too there is a citrus confit character to the more floral suffused aromas of oyster shell, quinine, and brine. There is again very good volume to the sappy and powerful larger-scaled flavours that terminate in a lemony, austere, and highly persistent finish that isn't quite as complex, at least not yet.
