The Burgundian wine Domaine of Bouchard Pére et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family-owned. In 1995 the Champagne house, Joseph Henriot, acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Today Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet while the wines are made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005, enabling them, to process all their wines with optimum efficiency.
In Burgundy, "Charmes’ was the term used for the common fields left to lie fallow. The person who transformed this field into a vineyard was very wise. The oldest bottle in the historic collection of the House of Bouchard Pére & Fils is a Meursault Charmes from .....1846 before it was classified as a "Téte de cuvé e’ in 1855. A recent tasting revealed the extraordinary quality of this wine which still has potential even today!
Wafting from the glass with scents of pear, yellow apples, struck match, and white flowers, the 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes is medium to full-bodied, satiny, and incisive, with fine concentration and a saline finish. This cuvée derives from holdings toward the bottom of this large climat, which appear to have overperformed in this warm, dry year.
The 2019 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru comes from clayey soils and was later harvested. It has a tight bouquet, well defined, less generous than its peers at the moment but focused and more mineral-driven. The palate is well balanced with grapefruit and lime on the entry. Good weight and concentration in this Charmes, and quite a spicy, almost Alsace-like finish. This will be intriguing to revisit in bottle. 10/20
