Bouchard Père & Fils is a renowned Burgundian wine Domaine with a rich history that dates back to 1731. Though it is no longer family-owned, the company was acquired by the Champagne house Joseph Henriot in 1995, resulting in a significant rise in quality. Today, Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet and the wines are made by Philippe Prost, who has been with the company since 1978. In 2005, the impressive gravity-flow winery, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed on the Route de Savigny, allowing them to process all their wines with optimal efficiency.
One of Bouchard Père & Fils' prestigious offerings is the Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru Magnum 1.5L 2019. Meursault Genevrières is a highly esteemed appellation and was classified as a "Tête de cuvée" as early as 1855 by Dr Lavalle in his renowned book "Histoire et Statistiques de la Vigne et des Grands Vins de la Côte-d'Or". Bouchard Père & Fils owns 2.65 hectares of this vineyard, and the Chardonnays produced from this area are often the first to be harvested on the estate.
The Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru Magnum 1.5L 2019 is a magnum-sized bottle, which holds 1.5 litres of wine, double the amount of a standard bottle. The magnum size offers several benefits, including slower aging and better preservation of wine quality. The larger volume also allows for more controlled oxidation and results in a more balanced wine. Additionally, the magnum bottle's appearance is impressive and makes a statement on any table or wine collection.
Offering up notes of pear, white flowers, toasted almonds, and beeswax, Bouchard's 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny, and chiselled, with a more tightly wound, introverted profile than the Charmes that preceded it. Built to age, this is a serious Genevrières that I look forward to tasting from bottle.
