Description

Leading prestigious Burgundy magazine Bourgogne Aujourdi announced Chateau de Meursault & Chateau de Marsannay as joint winners of producer of the year 2021!

With over 1000 years of history, Château de Meursault follows an approach of excellence in respect of nature, the environment, and the climates. With the 2022 vintage, the entire vineyard of Château de Meursault will be conducted in organic farming. Château de Meursault, one of the largest estates in Burgundy, produces as many red wines as white wines made respectively from the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. The 35 appellations including 18 Premiers Crus and 4 Grands Crus all come from their own vines in organic conversion. In 2018, they reduced the weight of the bottle by 15% while preserving the originality of the model designed in the 18th century.

Both Château de Meursault and Château de Marsannay won the title of Best Producers from Bourgogne Aujourd’hui magazine with this laudatory comment from the editorial staff: “Faster, higher, stronger, the motto of the Olympic Games perfectly illustrates the rise in power of the two domains since their acquisition in 2012 by Olivier Halley.

Charmes, often written as Les Charmes, is one of Meursault's largest and best-known Premier Cru vineyards. Found on the lower slope of the Cote d'Or at the southern end of the village, it is one of a cluster of top climats with Genevrieres on the northern border and Perrieres above it on the slopes. Charmes Premier Cru wines, made entirely from Chardonnay, are vibrant and honeyed with rich, nutty characters and floral overtones. Charmes is split into two lieux-dits, and (as is often the case) the top part – dessus, or "above" – is favoured by critics. In fact, many commentators have questioned the Premier Cru status of the lower half – dessous, or "below", suggesting that it should be demoted to simple Meursault "village" wine. However, this has no bearing on the status of wines from the top half of the vineyard, which are included among Meursault's best.

Review

Pale yellow. Rather a backward nose, this appears low key after the oaky sumptuous character of Perrieres, but it is a brilliant wine, all about the white fruit, ripe enough to include white peach flesh, but beautifully managed and with exceptional persistence. Almost saline in its minerality at the finish
