This wine was made from 100% Riesling grown in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. Riesling vines from two different clones were planted in 1988 on undulating northern and eastern-facing slopes with duplex soils of ironstone gravel over a clay sub-soil. Several trellis systems are used throughout the vineyard, which is situated 256 meters above sea level. The cool nights and long slow ripening periods were typical of the Frankland River region allowing maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned.
A light to gently mid-weighted wine bristling with such intent that one can almost whiff the minerals on the nose, from spa salts, chalk, iodine and something smooth and slatey. Aromas of nashi pear, quince, citrus blossom and kaffir lime, with a juicy spurt of apple granita across the strident finish. Finishes with an emphatic pucker, suggesting that there is plenty in store for mid to longer-term cellaring. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. From organically grown grapes.
Seriously, if Frankland Estate can’t make outstanding Riesling, well, what’s the point of getting out of bed? A more subtle offering in 2022 retains the DNA thumbprint of the vineyard. Lemon blossom, honeysuckle, lime zest and finger lime acidity, yet softish and almost plush. The palate builds, adding a slip of sexy phenolics, the merest smidge of sweetness and everything in harmony to extend out and excite to the very end. As usual, an elegant, distinct riesling.
