Although Domaine de la Pousse D'Or has vineyards reaching back as far as the eighteenth century, it has only existed as it does today since 1964. It is a forward-thinking estate and one which was instrumental in pioneering a new technique for evaporating excess water to re-balance the must, resulting in less need for chaptalisation. It is perhaps unsurprising to learn, in view of this, that Domaine is owned by a consortium of Australian shareholders.
La Pousse d'Or is located a few kilometres from Beaune, in the commune of Volnay. The 13 hectares of vineyard are spread among the communes of Volnay, Pommard, and Santenay, each producing distinctive and stylish wines.
Clos de L'Audignac (also "Clos d'Audignac") is a Volnay Premier Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune.
The 1.1-hectare (2.7 acres) vineyard is located at the southern end of Volnay village itself. The Clos is one of several small properties around the buildings that may make up the larger designation referred to simply as "Le Village".
However, it is a monopole of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, and relatively well-known in its own right. Indeed, the vineyard name comes from the post-revolutionary owner of the Pousse d'Or manor house: François d'Audignac.
The vineyard is effectively the manor's front garden (see picture). Despite this prestigious association, the vineyard's pronounced northeastern aspect means the site does not get a high level of afternoon sun.
Plump mid-red with the very ripe plump cherry style of fruit. No more than middleweight, all in red fruit at first, but with some sweeter darker notes behind. Slightly rougher tannins here make the finish seem more abrupt.
