2021

Description

2021 was a year marked by severe frost in April and unstable weather conditions in Burgundy. Despite a smaller harvest than usual, the quality shone through, with floral and balanced white wines as well as bright, full-bodied and aromatic red wines.

This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru wine comes from a vineyard of less than 0.3 hectares in Chambolle Musigny, which rests on cracked brown soils and a marly vein, facing east/south-east.

The Maison Louis Jadot, established in 1859, is a real benchmark in Burgundy. Its adventure began with the acquisition of the Beaune Premier Cru "Clos des Ursules" in 1826. Owning prestigious plots of vines, the House passes on its savoir-faire to generation after generation to offer wine lovers the best of Burgundy.

Head of Maison Louis Jadot since 1992, Pierre-Henry Gagey entrusted his position to Thomas Seiter (Bouchard Père et Fils) and the role of General Manager to his son Thibault Gagey in September 2022.

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has one of the finest aromatics from Jadot this year with a seductive bouquet of wild strawberry, blueberry, sous-bois and hints of Earl Grey and wilted rose petals. Wonderful. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and crisp acidity. It's taut and fresh with a touch of spice toward the cohesive and persistent finish. This is a superb effort in such a challenging growing season.

One of the paler pink-ruby colours. The bouquet feels more white soil, and then there is the weight behind, while retaining elegance, which the Echezeaux did not have. Pretty and fresh, very far from the more massive style of Bonnes Mares. Actually, this comes mostly from the brown clay part of the terroir but the vintage gives more elegance. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2022.
