East facing within a smaller valley that runs from Yarra Junction to Poweltown in the south, featuring grey loam soils with underlying silt. Cooler winds roll off the Yarra River, with mountains directly to the north and south-west providing protection from hot afternoon sun in summer. Typically later ripening, thicker skins and higher acids are reflected in elegant structure with clean lines and powerful drive.
A notably pluvial winter followed by an equally soaked spring posed challenges during flowering, leading to reduced yields. However, these conditions bestowed robust, luxuriant green canopies upon our venerable dry-grown vineyards, much to their contentment. Navigating the ever-changing weather demanded agility to pinpoint the optimal harvest moments, yet our efforts were handsomely rewarded with fruit of exceptional quality and wines imbued with a remarkable depth of flavor.
What a joy-inducing drop! Radiant cherry in color, it smells like a bowl full of just picked red berries, rhubarb and watermelon. Subtle spice, mineral and floral notes hang out underneath. All that juicy, pulpy fruit washes over the tongue, cinched by gentle tannins and lingering long after swallowing. A lightweight red for drinking slightly chilled. The epitome of modern, cool-climate Aussie Pinot.
