Nestled in the heart of the Margaret River Region's southernmost enclave, Augusta, this vineyard stands as a singular gem. Here, it is caressed by the confluence of the Southern and Indian Oceans, mere moments away from the tranquil Blackwood River inlet. This extraordinary locale dances to the rhythm of Antarctic breezes sweeping in from the Southern Ocean, while the steadfast warmth of the mighty Blackwood River tempers its nights. By day, this vineyard enjoys a coolness 4-5 degrees below Margaret River, while nights offer a comforting 2–3-degree warmth differential. It is this harmonious interplay that bequeaths our wines with their distinctive flavors, charismatic character, and exceptional aging potential.
Fruit is picked on a combination of flavour, vine condition, sugar/pH/TA and intuition. They pick across a spectrum of ripeness levels for complexity. Every block is picked and vinified separately for maximum blending options. Swards of rye and clover have been planted to help prevent soil compaction and to assist in fixing nitrogen. The vines are all trellised using Vertical Shoot Position (VSP), and are spur-pruned with the exception of a couple of older blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc that are cane pruned.
Handpicked, whole bunch pressed with solids and wild fermented into French oak barriques for 10 months with minimal battonage. Unfined and unfiltered to show the raw power of this vineyard.
