In this vintage, 2020 emerges as a bolder counterpart to the 2019, offering thirst-quenching acidity and vibrant fresh fruit with a subtle, underlying richness. What truly shines in this wine are its tannins, and it's worth noting that not a trace of oak is present. This is an epic creation, boasting remarkable fruit and tannin longevity. The cohesion throughout the range is truly remarkable, characterized by a slatey minerality and a hint of enigmatic darkness. The palate unfolds with notes of rich dark cherry, a touch of spice, and a zesty orange twist. This is a showcase of Barbaresco at its finest, with its characteristic incisive tannins, and the Serraboella vineyard's distinct boldness on full display. Truly a delicious revelation.
On the edge of Barolo village, just a few metres down and across the cobblestones of the via Roma from Cantina Bartolo Mascarello, is the unprepossessing cantina frontage to one of the most exciting discoveries in my many years of going to the Langhe. It’s not as though Barale just emerged, but these firmly traditional wines are now being made to the full potential of the family’s remarkable vineyards and this unforced, traditional style is now being fully appreciated.
A masterclass in the Nebbiolo grape, here specifically from the Serraboella vineyard in the Neive commune. The nose indicates background orange fruit and orchard florals, even chocolate notes, all of which remain in play as you taste, a core red fruit backbone driving the palate, its varietal grip present yet welcoming, allowing the wine’s energy to flow with ease and encouragement. The wine is irresistible.
The 2020 Barbaresco Serraboella is a big, strapping wine. Just bottled, the 2020 is going to need at least a few years to settle down, as it is quite raw and unformed today. Its density and overall power are impressive though. A blast of dark cherry, plum, new leather, mocha, incense and a kiss of new oak build into the substantial finish.
