Situated between Volnay and Mersault, the village of Monthélie is not as well-known as its famous cousins. Nevertheless, the first traces of vineyards here date back to the 9th century. The Monthélie red is a handsome ruby colour. The aromas are of small red and black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant) with sometimes floral notes (violet, peony) which with age shift towards underbrush, bracken, and spices. The firm and velvety texture overlie delicate tannins. Monthélie, like Volnay, these wines are more feminine.
Perfumed and aromatic, the nose is redolent of violets and high-toned red berry fruit. On the palate, however, there is good ripeness and depth of flavour to the fruit. Not hugely substantial, but this is well-balanced and elegant, with lots of finesse.
Bright and charming, the 2019 Monthélie Village bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, sweet soil tones, and potpourri. Medium-bodied, lively and perfumed, it's elegant and mineral, with a pretty core of fruit and a mouthwatering finish. This is turning out very nicely.
