Nestled within just 12 acres, the petite Cerbaia estate boasts vines planted in the '70s on northeast-facing parcels, their roots firmly embedded in the renowned calcareous soil of Montosoli. Embarking on her journey at the estate, Elena Pellegrini, in only her second vintage, has crafted an exquisite Brunello—a testament to her emerging prowess.
The elevated terrain and mineral-rich soil yield naturally petite, thick-skinned berries, ideal for crafting a wine of concentrated structure. Yet, it's the aromatic complexity and finesse of tannin, usually reserved for wines at a higher price point, that define Cerbaia's exceptional offering.
Serious and complex alternating notes of undergrowth with hints of slightly dried prunes, camphor, dates and chopped mushrooms. Full bodied, velvety tannins and a luminous finale of incredible pleasantness. Better from 2022.
The Cerbaia 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is silky and polished. There are small berry nuances on the bouquet with background notes of spice, tar and dried rose. These fragrant layers are delicate, light and softly intermingled. There is more power in terms of mouthfeel; however, and both the tannic impact of the wine and its freshness leave a lasting mark. That hot 2017 vintage punch definitely comes through at the end, so I recommend giving this bottle ample time to age and soften. Production is 10,000 bottles.
A firm and chewy wine with cherry and sandalwood character as well as hints of praline. It’s full-bodied and solid with attractive tannins that give the wine form and tension. Try after 2023.
