In 1968 George Patrick Lynn, Patriarch of the Lynn family allowed his sons Brian and Anthony to plant vines on the family’s Coonawarra property “Majella”. The vineyard prospered, more vines were planted and eventually, a winery was built and Majella Wines as we now know it was established. George passed away in 1976 aged only 50, but in his memory, we are proud to present this wine, the Majella “GPL68”, as a fine example of Cabernet Sauvignon at its very best.
The Lynn family planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Coonawarra in 1968 but didn’t make wine under their own name until 1991. They recently celebrated 25 years as winemakers. This wine celebrates the milestone; it’s from the ‘house block’, planted in 1971. The GPL of the name stands for George Patrick Lynn, who died in 1976. The ’68’ stands for the year the Lynn family first entered the wine industry. Only 200 dozen have been produced. It spent 20 months in all-French oak.
A wealth of fruit, a wealth of oak, and a wealth of tannin all converge before melting more-or-less seamlessly into one another. This is a big, tannic cabernet built to last for just about ever. It tastes of boysenberry, jellied blackcurrant, eucalypt, resiny/creamy oak, and smoky tobacco. It has muscles on its muscles, and it’s still learning how to apply them; it’s still growing into itself. Citrussy acidity is prominent in the wine but the might/power of the fruit/tannin wins the day. The dusty aftertaste, infused with blackcurrant and mint, helps seal the high-quality deal.
