Description

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.

An exquisitely hedonistic and nearly decadent rendition of Grange, this remarkable blend comprising 91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from three prestigious vineyards - Kalimna in the Barossa, Penfolds' other esteemed Barossa sources, and the renowned McLaren Vale - showcases itself as a sumptuously opulent wine, evoking comparisons to the allure of Pomerol. With a fruit profile that leans towards the luxuriously over-ripe, it enchants the palate with the fusion of cherry liqueur, cranberry, and cassis, all elegantly presented in a full-bodied, velvety, and decidedly forward style. While it may not follow the classic Grange archetype with its enormous structure and massive concentration, this wine is an embodiment of richness, fullness, and indulgence.

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 1989 was made using a blend of 91 percent shiraz and 9 percent cabernet sauvignon. Grapes for this vintage of Grange were grown in the Barossa Valley (Kalimna Vineyard and others) and McLaren Vale regions. It was a good summer until the finish, when it turned extremely hot – and then wet. Very sweet profile. Raisiny, aniseedy, confected. Drinking it is like sucking on licorice-allsorts – did Dave Powell visit Penfolds during this vintage? (that was a joke). Absolutely hedonistic, bitter on the finish maybe but soft and delicious through the palate – a complete crowd pleaser. I am one of the crowd. It’s not a stylish Grange but it packs a sweet punch of flavour.

Deep Ruby Garnet, Healthy Color, Floral, Violets, and Black Olives, a surprisingly youthful nose contrary to all expectations. Juicy, sweet, and very well-balanced, with fresh blackberries and cherries, chocolatey and persistent, a significant and positive surprise, possesses length and power. In this state, it holds a great future.

Dense purple. Ah! what a nose: ultra-rich New World shiraz. Port-like, massive, unctuous sweet fruit, dense with a velvety black chocolate richness. Stunning nose. Palate carries this through in a really silky, vanilla-infused power of opulent black fruit and spice. Incredibly long, the tannins are supportive but soft, and the acidity beautifully integrated. Very, very fine

A hearty and flavorful dish such as a peppercorn-crusted steak or a spicy Moroccan lamb tagine pairs wonderfully with a Shiraz, complementing its bold and robust characteristics.

Tasting Profile

Nose
This remarkable Grange exudes an almost hedonistic and decadent allure. Comprising 91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from three prestigious vineyards - Kalimna in the Barossa, Penfolds' other esteemed Barossa sources, and the renowned McLaren Vale, it offers a beautifully opulent bouquet reminiscent of Pomerol. The fruit profile leans luxuriously towards the over-ripe, with notes of cherry liqueur intermingling with cranberry and cassis.
Palate
On the palate, this wine unveils itself as full-bodied, velvety, and decidedly forward. While it may not follow the classic Grange archetype characterized by enormous structure and massive concentration, it embodies a different kind of richness and fullness, exuding an indulgent, corpulent, and fleshy character.
