Description

This outrageously successful Yarra Valley winery is run by husband-and-wife team Leanne De Bortoli and Steve Webber but owned by the De Bortoli family. The 1st of the 4th-generation members, Kate Webber, joined the winemaking team in ’20 after vintages in Burgundy and Napa Valley. The wines come in 3 tiers: at the top Single Vineyard, then Estate Vineyard and then La Boheme. Small-volume labels increase the offer with Melba, Riorret and Vinouque enabling trials (at the commercial level) of new varieties and interesting blends. Italian varieties for the BellaRiva wines come from the King Valley, and Windy Peak from regions including the Yarra, King Valley and Heathcote. The PHI wines are made from the 17.5ha Lusatia Park vineyard, purchased in ’15, and from Heathcote.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Meaty is the first word which comes to mind. It has a jerkylike quality, that cured and dried meatiness, but also a grilled note.
Palate
It’s the smokiness that really adds an extra layer of complexity to the wine. Traditional fruits with red cherry and red currants, solid tannins as well. It’s definitely a food wine. Pull this out at a BBQ and it’ll go down an absolute treat.
